The Automatic SCB system, used in conjunction with the S205N Unitronic 50 kN load frame, is an accurate device for conducting mechanicaltesting of asphalt mixtures. It can perform various versions of the Semi-Circular Bend (SCB) test for evaluating the fracture characteristics ofasphalt mixtures at intermediate service temperature conditions. Pavement engineers can use these tests to determine the material characteristics needed for pavement design, quality control and/or quality assurance purposes.


Our Automatic SCB system is able to operate in load-control and displacement-control modes and can accommodate a wide range of testaccessories in order to run several asphalt performance tests, including IDT/TSR, MARSHALL and DIRECT SHEAR.


In particular, Matest offers accessories for conducting SCB tests according to EN 12697-44, AASHTO TP124 (recommended by University ofIllinois) and ASTM D8044 (recommended by Louisiana State University). The load and displacement parameters measured by the AutomaticSCB system can be used to predict cracking performance of asphalt mixtures based on the Illinois Flexibility Index (I-FIT) and Critical StrainEnergy Release Rate (Jc).
